For the past 19 years, we, Ron and Wendy Solsrud, have dedicated our lives to improving animal welfare—not just in words, but in action. At Petland Iowa City, we do not support substandard breeding—full stop. That’s why we work exclusively with breeders who are Canine Care Certified through Purdue University or are actively working toward certification. This program, backed by veterinarians and animal welfare scientists, represents the gold standard for canine care in America today.

Supporting Breeders to Improve Animal Welfare Standards

Turning away from struggling breeders doesn’t help the animals in their care. When we identify a breeder who falls short of our expectations, we don’t simply walk away. Instead, we mentor, guide, and support them toward meeting higher standards. Once they meet these benchmarks, they undergo rigorous third-party inspections through Purdue’s program.
