Where Do Petland Iowa City's Puppies Come From?

Petland Iowa City's puppies come from licensed professional breeders, including some small hobby breeders who specialize in a single breed. We choose breeders for their strong compliance history and their commitment to animal welfare and veterinary care guidelines. Petland Iowa City does not buy from puppy mills. Our owner and managers personally visit our breeders. Since 2014, we've taken more than 20 breeder inspection tours, traveling over 35,000 miles and visiting more than 300 kennels in Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. On each visit, we look at socialization, veterinary care and exercise for both the puppies and their parents. Petland Iowa City is also an early supporter of Canine Care Certified, a voluntary nationwide program whose standards were developed at Purdue University by Dr. Candace Croney, Ph.D. It's the only program that measures both the physical health and the behavioral well-being of dogs in breeder care, and certified breeders complete yearly audits. What Veterinary Care Do Puppies Receive?

Each puppy is seen by licensed veterinarians at several stages before it's available to go home:

• Before arrival: a veterinarian check before the puppy arrives at our store
• On arrival: an exam by our consulting veterinarians
• In our care: a consulting veterinarian provides preventive care, oversees our healthcare protocols and visits the store weekly
• Before going home: every puppy is certified healthy by a veterinarian

Many of our puppies are seen by two to three independent veterinarians before they become available. Health records are available on request, and we review them with you before you take your puppy home. Learn about our veterinary care
